Hello Everyone, The program I work for, College Now at City University of New York, is looking for people to volunteer as judges for the New York City Science and Engineering Fair. The New York City Science and Engineering Fair (NYCSEF), sponsored by the New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE) and The City University of New York, is the area's largest science, math, engineering, and technology research competition for high school students. NYCSEF provides a venue for the city's top young scientists and engineers to present their projects to a panel of judges and compete for a variety of prizes. The Science Fair is looking for judges in fourteen areas, including social and behavioral sciences. Judges can be practicing scientists, doctoral students or other professionals in their fields in the New York City area (unfortunately the program cannot provide accommodations or funding for people coming from outside the area). I emphasize that you do NOT have to be an academic to judge, if you are a professional in a relevant field you can participate as well. We especially need people in the social and behavioral sciences as that is the largest category represented. Judging for this year's Preliminary Round will be held on Sunday, March 1, 2009 at the City College of New York (Manhattan). The top 25% of student researchers from each subject category will be invited to participate in the Finals Round in early April (date and location TBD). Twenty students will ultimately be selected to represent NYC in May at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Reno, NV. It's an excellent volunteer opportunity and a chance to meet talented students from throughout New York City and become involved in fostering and promoting science education. I was a social and behavioral sciences judge last year and have been involved in a number of NYSCEF's year round initiatives. You can find more information on qualifications for judges as well as the fair in general on the website: http://collegenow.cuny.edu/sciencefair/ I can also answer questions, or at least get them answered for you. Please pass this on to anyone you think might be interested. Thanks so much! Rana A. Emerson Yale, CC'93
